MINI

FUEL OIL CONDITIONING MODULE

FOR DIESEL FUEL APPLICATIONS 2-25 GPM

MINI FOCM PRODUCT

Precise Power Systems has developed a Diesel Fuel Filtration module specifically designed for pre-filtration and water removal for all Large Marine Diesel Engine Manufacturers.  This unit is completely automated, maintenance friendly, and will further improve overall fuel quality by offering much better particulate and water removal capabilities compared to the competition.  The benefits will result in improved individual injector and cylinder head valve maintenance periods by improving fuel quality.

MINI FOCM TEST PROCEDURE

The purpose of this test procedure is to simulate how fuel is filtered on-board the WMSL class vessels and test the efficiency of the Pall Ultipleat Diesel Plus (UDP) product.  The Pall UDP product will be tested against particulate and water removal capabilities.  Recently we’ve learned that fuel currently pumped to the main propulsion diesel engines is provided under a vacuum, as the fuel pump is located downstream of the current filtration system manufactured by SEPAR.  The Pall UDP product is designed to operate under pressure.  However, in recent conversations with Pall engineering, indications are the product should still operate effectively, but testing is recommended.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED

  • PPS Mini-FOCM skid w/ vacuum gauges installed upstream & downstream

  • 480 VAC Power Supply

  • Viking Pump Model HJ493

  • Control Cabinet w/ VFD

  • Flowmeter

  • Pall UDP filter elements, 20” Length, 5 micron

    • Part Number:  UDPEJP20 (5 um)

  • 300 Gallon Stainless Steel tank w/ baffles and closed lid

  • Qty. (1) Agitator

  • Pall black & white kit

  • Sample collection jars supplied by Polaris Laboratories

  • ISO 12103-1, A3 Medium Test Dust

  • Flex Hoses

  • 100 gallons of F-76 Fuel Oil

SAMPLE BOTTLE ANALYSIS

  • We have chosen to use Polaris Laboratories to analyze the sample bottles we gather during testing.  Polaris Labs came recommended and they are a local company which should make the transportation of fuel samples easy.  Polaris will provide the following results:

  • ISO 4406 Cleanliness Code (Particle Counts)

  • Dirty fuel is represented by a 22/20/18 count.

  • Target Spec for Clean fuel when using the 5 micron UDP product is 15/14/12

  • Water Content in PPM

  • Target water content for Clean fuel is <50 ppm.  This is according to the Pall UDP data sheet.

  • **Note:  The Pall Black & White test kit will be used to gather particle counts in real time and should provide a reference point when comparing to results from Polaris Labs.

 TEST PROCEDURE

  • Install all components consistent with Test Setup Drawing

  • Install Pall Part # UDPEJS20 filter in mini-FOCM housing

  • Fill tank w/ 100 gallons of F-76 fuel in “dirty” side of baffled tank where agitator is located.

  • Hook up Power, run pump to purge all air from system

  • Pour ¼” cup of ISO test dust into fuel and turn on agitator for 10 minutes.

  • Draw Sample with Pall Black & White Test kit.  Sample should be consistent with ISO 4406 code 21/20/18.  If cleaner than 21/20/18, keep adding test dust until fuel meets spec.

  • Pour 16 ounces of water into fuel and agitate for 10 minutes.  16 ounces of water equates to 2500 ppm in 100 gallons of fuel.

  • Pump all fuel (100 gallons) from “dirty” side to “clean” side of tank.

  • Monitor Flow meter, make sure fuel flow is @ 8 GPM

  • Record Differential Pressures on inlet and outlet side of filter vessel.

  • Gather fuel samples from Influent and Effluent Sample Ports

  • Qty. (1) with Pall Black and White Sample Bottles

  • Qty. (1) with Polaris Laboratories Pre-Cleaned Sample Bottles

  • Monitor Water level in filter vessel.

  • Gather all samples and send to Polaris Laboratories for Analysis.

TEST RESULTS

Test #1 – High Solids:

The first test was a high solids test where 3 cups of the ISO test dust were added to the tank.  16 ounces of water was also added, and mixer was turned on for 30 minutes prior to running pump and taking samples.  There was an inlet (Dirty) and outlet (Clean) sample taken.  The inlet sample measured at an ISO 4406 code of 23/22/17 w/ 46 ppm of water content.  The mini-FOCM reduced these levels down to 15/14/11 w/ 19 ppm water content.

Test #2 – Low Solids:

The second test was a low solids test where only 4 ounces of ISO test dust was added to the tank.  16 ounces of water was also added, and mixer was turned on for 30 minutes prior to running pump and taking samples.  There was an inlet (Dirty) and outlet (Clean) sample taken.  The inlet sample measured at an ISO 4406 code of 17/15/12 w/ 333 ppm of water content.  The mini-FOCM reduced these levels down to 14/13/11 w/ 16 ppm water content.
